Read for the Cure began in 2006 when two members of a Toronto book club, who had just finished treatment for cancer, had the idea of harnessing their energy towards raising funds for cancer research through their love of reading.
Through a valued relationship with founding sponsor and Principal Partner Penguin Random House of Canada Ltd, Read for the Cure members volunteer their time and efforts to host an exceptional series of literary evenings held on an annual basis in Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary and - since 2014 -Vancouver featuring best selling authors who speak about their work, rather than reading. After their individual presentations, a Question and Answer session offers an opportunity for the attendees to find out more about their favourite authors.

Each guest goes home with copies of the three authors’ books, courtesy of Penguin Random House of Canada Ltd. A delightful evening not to be missed for book lovers everywhere! Authors who have appeared at the events include Margaret Atwood, Ian Brown, Vincent Lam, Annabel Lyon, Linden MacIntyre, Ami McKay, Audrey Niffenegger and Jane Urquhart.

Proceeds raised from these events support the Cancer Research Society’s Environment-Cancer Fund™, an initiative dedicated to compiling a large body of scientific evidence to demonstrate how environmental factors including living/working conditions affect one’s risk of developing cancer and future methods for prevention and detection. Each year a funded researcher from the Cancer Research Society shares a brief overview of their work related to the Environment-Cancer Fund™, thereby providing further insight into this area of essential research.

Since its inception and thanks to the generosity of the Read for the Cure Foundation, their partners, volunteers and attendees close to $810,000 has been raised through these events.
